Pets of the Week - Heart of the Rockies Radio

Freya is our Heart of the Rockies Radio News pet of the week! This gorgeous cat arrived at AVHS last Thursday. She was brought in with five other felines, all coming from Cortez, Colorado. We had the space in our adoptable cat room and were thrilled to be able to help out a nearby shelter. One of these awesome kitties has already been adopted! Freya is anxiously awaiting her new home here in Chaffee County. She’s a gorgeous cat who loves to play and explore. Freya is spayed, microchipped, and up-to-date on......

Good Pets. Good Kids. Charming Portraits.

By: Judy Hamontre, AVHS Vice-chair One of Ark-Valley Humane Society’s most heartwarming events is our “Good Pet/Bad Portrait” fundraiser. Held this year from February 26 though March 10, there were 100 participants and 73 artists, the highest numbers compared to those from past years. The event is pretty straight forward. Participants make a donation to AVHS and send in a few photos of their beloved pet in order to receive a portrait which is created by volunteer artists. Participants know that the age and talent of artists vary, meaning the quality of......

Reflecting on 2023

By: Nikki Ritter, AVHS Executive Director  Spring presents an ideal time to reflect on the number of animals helped through our community retention and shelter services in 2023. Last year, our team of eleven staff members, eight board members, and 70 volunteers, helped 1,546 animals through our sheltering, spay/neuter, microchipping, safety net, and adoption programs. In doing so, the average length of stay for animals was only 18 days and our Asilomar Live Release Rate was 97.1%. Of the 621 animals sheltered, 67% of cats and 82% of dogs originated in Chaffee......

Socializing the Shy and Fearful Cat

By: Judy Hamontre, AVHS Vice-chair In my article titled “You Can Teach an Old Cat New Tricks,” published March 22, I quoted Katenna Jones, a certified animal behaviorist, writing: “The benefits of cat training are vast. Training provides mental and physical stimulation as well as positive social contact. Just the act of training in and of itself is incredibly valuable for frustrated, bored, shy, and fearful cats.” Several domestic cats who come to shelters, including our own Ark-Valley Humane Society, are shy and fearful.  Great care is taken to assess, treat them gently, and......

Together Fur-ever

By: Judy Hamontre, AVHS Vice-chair One of the goals of Ark-Valley Humane Society is to keep pets and their humans together. It is a special bond of love, not meant to be broken. Such strong bonds can also exist between animals. Sadly, it can be difficult to keep these closely connected cats and dogs together because people often cannot adopt two animals. Luckily that was not the scenario for two adorable, older kittens, Sweet Pea and Rowdy. This duo was raised together from kittenhood. Sadly their owner could no longer keep them......

You can teach an old cat new tricks

By: Judy Hamontre, AVHS Vice-chair Not only can you teach an old cat new tricks, you can also teach kittens. Many cat lovers believe cats are just as fun to train as dogs, saying it is a great way to connect with your feline friends and teach them the meaning of a few key words. According to Katenna Jones, a certified animal behaviorist and director of Jones Animal Behavior in Rhode Island, “Many cats love training if done properly, with patience and rewards. Cats welcome learning basic directions and most kittens take......

Say hello to our newest Heart of the Rockies Radio News pet of the week, Saturn!  This handsome cat is a 5-year-old Manx/Domestic shorthair mix. He was found and brought to AVHS late last month. Unfortunately no owner came forward for Saturn, so he is now looking for a loving place to call home ❤????   Saturn likes to watch the world form a high, sunny perch.
